He joined De Beers in 2005 and was first appointed to the Board of De Beers plc, as Commercial Director, in July Bruce was appointed Group Director, Strategy and Business Development, for Anglo American in January 2016 (and was a Non-Executive Director on the De Beers plc Board). Previously, at De Beers, he had responsibility for strategy, corporate affairs, business development and technology. As Executive Head of Strategy and Business Development for De Beers (2011-2015), he played a central role in shaping the direction of the business, including the development of corporate strategy, leading De Beers’ sales agreement negotiations with key governments and guiding all group mergers and acquisition activities. He led the reshaping of De Beers’ mining portfolio, creating the De Beers Technologies unit, and delivering on De Beers’ commitments to its government partners. Bruce has been based in Johannesburg and London and has spent considerable time in Botswana, Namibia, Canada, India, Russia, the Far East and the US, so he has unique insight into the needs of De Beers’ producer partners, communities, Sightholders, downstream partners and consumers. Bruce holds a BSc in applied maths and an LLB from the University of Cape Town, as well as an LLM from Cambridge. He became Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources in the Republic of Botswana in November He attended the Financial Management Programme at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University in the US in He previously spent 12 years with The BOC Group (latterly a member of The Linde Group), a leading global gas and engineering company, where he held a number of senior finance roles. He has extensive corporate and operational finance experience, having played a leading role in a number of Anglo American’s major transactions, the company’s capital management and its overall financial strategy. He has also worked closely with Anglo American business units around the world. Gareth is a qualified chartered accountant and graduated with a degree in economics from the University of Durham in the UK in SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Tony’s 35-year career in the mining industry has spanned iron ore, copper, nickel and gold and includes his roles as Operations Executive at Newcrest Mining and as Head of the Gold Business at Western Mining Corporation. SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Nimesh joined De Beers from Anglo American where he was Group Head of Corporate Finance, leading a team based in London and Johannesburg. SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Barend is a chartered accountant with broad international experience in mining, energy, finance, stakeholder relations, business turnarounds, corporate recovery and corporate governance. In 1998, he joined the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning as Principal Economist. He was appointed Group Head of Finance in 2003 and Chief Financial Officer of the Base Metals business in SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Phillip began his career with De Beers in 1988 as Internal Auditor at the Cullinan Diamond Mine and became Senior Audit Manager, Global Operations, in He has since served as Financial Manager, Group Exploration, Group Manager, Internal Audit, and Finance Director for DBCM. He holds a degree in accounting, is a registered associate general accountant and completed his MBA in He has a first class degree in mineral engineering from the University of Leeds in the UK.
